Without the retaining collar, the coins spread out and become larger than normal coins.

I would recommend taking the the quarter to a reputable coin dealer in your area. They will have a very different “ring” to them if dropped on a hard surface such as wood, metal or glass. One of the few first year errors I have been able to locate in the first year of issue for the State Quarter Program.

The second piece is a 1968-S Proof Quarter, struck on a 90% silver planchet (Type 2, with upset rims) left over from 1964. It is a pretty coin. Zach (author) from Colorado on October 03, 2018: I have a 2014 florida everglades quarter the edges of coin are not ribbed -its flat and you can see copper on the edge, I vast amounts of coin collect, need accurate appraisal, My most recent find is a 2015D Nebraska “ Homestead”. This mint error will cause both the obverse and reverse design to be stamped off-center. First Three Years of the America the Beautiful Quarter Program (15 Total Designs). If the coin you have was in fact struck on a presidential dollar planchet, you should immediately notice that the size of the coin will be much larger than a standard quarter.
I plan to send it in to be varified. A coin with an off center strike is created when the coin blank is struck outside the collar that holds it in place when the die strikes. I also notice the coin is rather dull in comparison to other coins of the same mint year. A single clip can pull values up to $75.

Easily spotted, these quarters will be completely missing an entire section of the coin. I think I came across a 2010 P Hot Springs quarter that appears to be stamped in silver. I found an unusual 2014 Arches quarter in a handful of change today: the front has an extra circle the same size as the wide border on the back where the text "Arches," "Utah," and "E Pluribus Unum" reside. Can anyone tell me the approximate value of this coin. Like the Statehood Quarter Program, quarter errors in the new set will pull an immediate premium.
